The Ashmont station on the Red Line in Dorchester, Mass., serves users of the subway, Mattapan trolley and buses. The design for the station reconstructs and modernizes the station, including lengthening the existing platforms and creating a new turnaround location for the trolleys.

In all, the project constructed a new platform and viaduct for the trolley service, two new lobbies with access to the station and an elevated busway. The project was complicated by the need for all of the construction to take place above the operating subway. Trolley service on the surface roads had to be halted for 18 months during construction, while the trolley line’s station and platforms also were renovated.

The project features epoxy-coated reinforcing bar in its cast-in-place concrete components for the station platforms and other areas where additional corrosion protection was required.

The station was integrated with an adjacent Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) comprising 116 mixed-income residential housing units and ground-floor retail spaces. The TOD, called The Carruth, is the first of its kind and is designed to provide housing near transit lines to reduce automobile usage. That project was completed in the spring of 2008.
