The Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care is the first health care building of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s new South Campus. The colorful exterior of this ambulatory care center establishes a distinctive image for the new campus while its light-filled, easy-to-navigate interior creates a welcoming environment for patients. The outpatient-care center sits on top of a five-story underground parking garage.

The building includes significant outdoor spaces including a 3-acre landscaped plaza and the green roof of an underground parking garage that was built using epoxy-coated reinforcing steel. A large circular lawn can hold up to 250 people for hospital events, while smaller spaces host activities for patients. The plaza also helps to manage stormwater and reduce heat absorption, contributing to the building’s anticipated Silver LEED rating. In addition, a 15,000-square-foot roof garden atop the elliptical six-story wing is an extension of a gymnasium used for rehabilitation.

At the ground level the streetscape welcomes visitors. A ramp in the lobby connects to the bridge that links the new building to the North Campus across the street. Glass elevators overlook the landscaped plaza and direct patients and families to the major clinical reception areas.

The Buerger Center and its related components will be constructed in phases. Phase 1 will include the first 12 levels of the building, a five-​level 1,560-car underground garage, and the landscaped plaza. Later phases will expand the center to 16 levels. The building is adaptable for changes in health care delivery and can be converted for office, research, or inpatient uses.
