Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research & Education Pier Deck
- Jul 26, 2013
The Downeast Institute (DEI) is a self-governing, non-profit organization that serves as a marine field station for the University of Maine at Machias. The DEI is located at Black Duck Cove on Great Wass Island, approximately 30 miles from the campus.
In 2009, the University of Maine at Machias received a 3-yr grant from the National Science Foundation and grant funds were used to build and partially equip a marine education center. The architect of the project was Sealander Architects of Ellsworth, Maine. Pizzagalli Construction Company of Portland was hired as the on-site contractor.
A wooden pier that existed until 2006 was replaced with a 30-ft x 100-ft pier. Kleinschmidt Associates (Pittsfield, Maine) performed the engineering, and DeLong Marine (Brewer, Maine) constructed the pier. Epoxy-coated reinforcing steel was used in the deck to protect against marine water corrosion.
