In 2003, the General Mitchell International Airport Parking Structure was awarded the Best Projects of 2003 – Award of Merit - Parking Garage by the MidWest Construction Magazine. The $81 million project added 1.1 million sq ft of parking and 3000 parking spaces, adjacent to the existing parking facility. A 700-ft long pedestrian access corridor connects the parking facility to the terminal.

The concrete was specifically designed using fly ash to reduce cracking, as cracking leads leakage of salts and requires repairs that reduce parking revenue. The top layer utilized epoxy-coated reinforcing bars. White panels were used on the exterior of the building in combination with large, circular helixes on the west face. These minimized the impression of a large gray concrete building.
