Kona International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower
- Sep 14, 2010
In 2009, the U.S. Department of Transportation redirected nearly $6.5 million in federal transportation money for the design and construction of a new air traffic control tower at Kona International Airport. The estimated total cost for the new tower is about $26 million. The existing control tower was built as a temporary facility approximately 36 years ago. The airport now serves 3 million passengers.
The new air traffic control tower at the Kona International Airport consists of a 19 ft tall base building with a total square footage of 7,177 square feet. A 118 ft tall air traffic control tower rises above this facility with a total square footage of 3780 square feet.
Approximately 618 cubic yard of concrete was injected below the tower matt footing to solidify the lava layer that is beneath the building. The facility tyhen rests on a 60 x 60 x 5 ft mat foundation. The tower consists of a fifteen foot thick, cast-in-place concrete. All reinforcing bar used in the project is epoxy coated.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2011.
