The Missouri DOT Missouri River Bridge is located in Hermann, Missouri, on Route 19 and opened in October 2007. It was named after Christopher “Kit” Bond, a senior United States Senator.
This 2,244-foot bridge with a 460-foot navigation span replaced a narrow steel truss bridge that was built in 1930 in Hermann, Missouri. The new bridge consists of two 12-foot driving lanes, two 10-foot shoulders and an 8-foot bicycle/pedestrian lane. This provides for improved access between Hermann and the Katy Train State Park. The bridge also has three overlooks off the bicycle/pedestrian lane. Over 15,000 cubic yards of concrete were used in the construction of the footings, piers and deck.
As this bridge is a major river crossing, it was designed for a higher seismic category than typical bridges in the area. Aesthetic additions also were made, including provision of concrete piers with a stone-block appearance. Lights, matching the historical lighting found in Hermann also were installed and the spun concrete light poles use an etched surface, topped with acorn-shaped luminaries.
