In 2008, a new 200-foot span pedestrian bridge was opened over Colma Creek in South San Francisco. This bridge is only 800 yards from the San Francisco Bay. The project was to build a bridge across a canal in a sensitive coastal area with noise sensitive neighbors, tight access, unregulated construction debris and soft bay mud. Saltwater affects this bridge as it is located only 800 yards from the San Francisco Bay.
The site was built with artificial fill over an old shipping channel and was constructed in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. The California Regional Water Quality Control Board mandated the minimum disturbance to the area so the access was very limited.
Deep pile foundations, epoxy-coated reinforcing and silica fume concrete were specified for durability and corrosion protection.
